FREE GUY Opens Higher Than Expected | BOX OFFICE REPORT (16/08/2021)

20th Century Fox’s Free Guy had a stronger than expected top place start this weekend with an estimated $28.4 million. The film also outpaced last weekend’s $26.2 million opening of The Suicide Squad by 8% and delivered the 7th biggest opening weekend since the pandemic.

Internationally, Free Guy begin with another $22.5 million from 41 markets. That placed Free Guy’s global debut at $50.9 million.

2. DON'T BREATHE 2

In the second spot was Screen Gems’ horror sequel, Don’t Breathe 2. The rated R follow-up to 2016’s kick-off home invasion thriller pulled in $10.6 million this past weekend.

Internationally, the film begin with an estimated $3.4 million this weekend from 34 markets. That placed Don’t Breathe 2’s opening global total at $14 million.

3. JUNGLE CRUISE

Disney’s Jungle Cruise claimed third place this weekend with an estimated $9 million. That brought the film’s domestic total to $82.1 million, while its $72.2 million international total put its global tally at $154.3 million.

4. RESPECT

In fourth was MGM’s Respect. The PG-13-rated biopic of Aretha Franklin, which stars Jennifer Hudson, made $8.8 million at domestic markets this weekend. The film’s strong word of mouth and older skewing audience can give it a strong holding power moving forward.

5. THE SUICIDE SQUAD

After last weekend’s poorer than expected debut, Warner’s The Suicide Squad was down a troubling 70 percent in its second weekend to land in fifth place with just $7.7 million.

The Suicide Squad has so far made $42.9 domestically and $75.2 internationally, to bring its global box-office haul to $118.1.
