I’ll give the movie credit where it’s due. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was a pretty decent sequel. However, the film was lacking an explanation throughout because of focusing on the unnecessary human elements. It did enough to please the crowd but didn’t stress the extent of its power enough for the audience to become memorable.
This was a good follow-up to the last and felt okay. The only problem was having human interaction in the early stages as it kind of lowered the bar. I also think this franchise is missing more game adaptations to be included. Having Knuckles in the movie was good but I felt the story should’ve focused more on building the relationship between Sonic and Tails as well as Dr. Robotnik finding out about the chaos emeralds. The human story felt forced and took unnecessary time. A good example of this is the wedding in the movie which was basically a filler that should’ve been taken out completely.

There were more than a few cheesy lines, but somehow Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, and the other cast members made them enjoyable. Idris Elba’s Knuckles was the standout character and Jim Carrey was classic Jim Carrey as well. He was over the top wacky and I’m not the biggest fan of that, but the best scenes were between him and Knuckles. Good for children since all of the humor was aimed at that demographic, but for adults, a lot of the jokes will feel flat.
Overall, while it was not better than the first one, it was still a very decent watch. There were a lot of weird editing choices though, and it seemed like they added a bunch of random filler nonsense that had nothing to do with any main character or their goals. But ultimately it was a solid film for kids, families, and fans of the Sonic franchise.
